Paul Reno is a Fish & Shellfish Pathologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Oregon State University. Dr. Reno's research interests include infectious diseases of marine and anadromous fishes and marine invertebrates, especially the ecology of disease. Recent research has focused on: constructing dynamic models of infection and disease in salmon & trout in the wild and culture; documenting the initiation of infectious disease in populations; assessing the risk of pathogen transmission among fishes; virulence factors of fish viruses and bacteria; studying the impacts of microsporean parasites of Dungeness crabs. Recently, Dr. Reno has become involved in seafood safety , in conjunction with Dr. Morrissey's lab in Astoria to determine the efficacy of high hydrostatic processing in inactivation human patogens in shellfish. He works closely with the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife, USFWS, NMFS, other state and federal agencies, aquaculturists and other commercial ventures involved with fish health, in developing applied research programs to help alleviate the destructive potential of diseases of marine and other aquatic animals.
