Science Pub: The Secret Lives of Sharks

Location: Edward J. Ray Hall | Charles McGrath Family Atrium | OSU-Cascades

This Science Pub looks at the critical role sharks play in maintaining vibrant marine ecosystems in Oregon and around the world. Presenter Dr. Alexandra McInturf is a researcher and postdoctoral fellow in OSU's Big Fish Lab. The lab's researchers have been featured on Discovery Channel's Shark Week and National Geographic's Shark Fest programs

Sharktoberfest 2023!

Join us at the Hatfield Marine Science Center on October 14 from 3-7 pm for an afternoon of shark fun! We'll have raffles for Big Fish Lab gear, kids crafts, food, beer & wine, a Shark Week episode viewing, in-person shark dissection, and a live Q&A with a Shark Week scientist! Fun for everyone! Come join for a fun night of baseball and shark science! We will illustrate how real sharks are much different than movie sharks. Marine exhibits will be showcased throughout the concourse.

The Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) is having an open house for the public from 10 am-4 pm...come check out educational and interactive booths from over 40 research labs based at HMSC, including the Big Fish Lab! Come hear about our research, see our shark tags up close, and learn about the sharks of Oregon. Fun for all ages!

October 4th, 2022 7-9 PM: OMSI Science Pub Portland: The Predator Next Door: An Introduction to Oregon's Coastal Shark Species

Join the BFL's Dr. Alex McInturf on an exploration of the sharks and their relatives in Oregon waters, ranging from the popular white shark to one of the largest species of fish in the world. Then, stay tuned to learn more about how the Big Fish Lab studies sharks of all sizes using cameras, transmitters, animal “FitBits”, drones and more, to examine unexplored shark habitats along Oregon’s coastline and beyond.

 

October 5th, 2022 5-7PM: HMSC’s Science on Tap: A Night of Sharks, Science, and Stories!

We will explore the 16 species of sharks found off the Oregon coast and take a deep dive inside a shark. The first half of the presentation will be a discussion of the sharks of Oregon, and the second half will be an on-site shark dissection! This is a free, family-friendly event and open to all.
