The Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station works with graduate students from several OSU Departments. While the Seafood Research and Education Center faculty work with Food Science and Technology students, their areas of study are diverse, ranging from the ideal texture of surimi seafood, to the best ways to chill fresh seafood, to new and inventive value-added products for seafood.
COMES-Newport faculty work with students from a wider variety of departments, including Fisheries and Wildlife, Applied Economics (formerly Agricultural and Resource Economics), and the Marine Resource Management program through the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. Using tools such as bioeconomic modeling, genetic and genomic analyses, population dynamics, stock assessment, seafood traceability programs, and innovative aquaculture techniques, COMES students contribute new, often interdisciplinary research that benefits COMES stakeholders and the fishing industry in general.
